Answers to Questions

Competitive

What is the difference between Competitive Elite and Competitive Premier?

Competitive Elite is the highest level of competition available for youth soccer players.  It involves the most traveling and the highest cost to play.  Competitive Elite is for the most talented players and the ones who are the most committed to the game of soccer, because Competitive Elite can be year round.  Competitive Elite is available between the ages of 8 and 19 and is the foremost development program for elite youth soccer players.  Competitive Elite is broken down into subdivisions, further enabling players of differing skills to be placed in the proper level of competition.  Competitive Elite teams are coached and trained by paid contracted Mustang Soccer professional coaches.

Competitive Premier is the second highest level of competition in youth soccer.  The teams do not travel as much as Competitive Elite teams, but it does include travel to various tournaments, league games and State Cup.  Competitive Premier is for youth players who are looking for a higher competitive challenge than recreational soccer, but do not want the financial commitment of Competitive Elite play.  Competitive Premier teams are coached by volunteer coaches, and have one of their weekly trainings with a contracted Mustang Soccer professional trainer.

What is the time and travel commitment to play competitive soccer?

The time and travel commitment will vary depending upon the team's age group and level.

Competitive Elite teams usually train 2-3 times per week beginning in April or May and continue training through January or February for younger age groups and March or April for the older age groups.  The older age groups take a break from November through February to allow for high school soccer.  These teams typically play in 5-7 tournaments per year with one or two of these being travel tournaments that require overnight stays.

Competitive Premier teams train 2 times per week beginning in July with one of the weekly sessions led by a professionally trained Mustang coach.  Training ends in November/December for younger teams and March or April for older teams that choose to play in State Cup.  Teams typically play 4-5 tournaments per year with perhaps one of these being a travel tournament that requires overnight stay.

League play for all level competitive teams begins in September and continues through early December.  Fall League play for all Divisions begins in September and finishes in early December.  Teams will play half their games at home and half of their games away.  Competitive Elite teams may play Spring League with games on Saturdays and Sundays in March, April, May and June.

What is the policy for players who live outside of Danville?

The Out of Area policy varies depending on age and level of play.  There are no restrictions on out of area players for Rec and Rec+ teams.  Please check the Out of Area Policy below for your child’s age group and Division.

Click HERE for Mustang Soccer League’s Out of Area Policy.

Any player who has been registered in Mustang for three consecutive seasons will be considered a Mustang Resident.  Mustang Residency Status will also be granted to any player whose siblings have a cumulative five year tenure as members of Mustang.

How much does it cost to participate in competitive soccer?

The cost will average between $625-$900 for Competitive Premier teams.

Elite Mustang program and team fees - in addition to the Mustang Soccer registration fees: Range from $1800 to $2950 (does not include uniforms, travel expenses or registration fee).

**Please note that these numbers are estimates only and/or may be subject to change.

What is the leagues refund policy?

Refunds submitted Feb 1st to June 15th - 100% of league registration fees less a $50 administrative fee may be refunded.

Refunds submitted June 16th to Start of League Play - refunds are only given for season ending injuries or relocation out of the area.  This refund is also subject to a $100 administrative fee and must be accompanied by a doctor's note or relocation verification.

Date of refund is the date the request is submitted online.  Informing your coach or a board member is not an acceptable substitute for submitting a refund request online or through the mail.

Note: Full refunds will be issued to players who registered after June 15th if placement on a team does not occur.

To request a refund email our League Registrar at rec4@mustangsoccer.com

Does Mustang Soccer offer Financial Aid?

Recreational

What is the difference between Recreational and Recreational Plus?

RECREATIONAL teams are available for age groups U6 to U19. The Rec division is open to all players of any level and there are no tryouts. All coaches are volunteers.  Except for the U6 age group (nicknamed the Ponies), there are two practices every week and a game on the weekend.  The Ponies just meet once a week on the weekend and they practice for 20 minutes and then play a game for 40 minutes.  Teams are formed based on the school your player attends and your home address.  Travel is limited to Danville, Alamo and San Ramon except for a few older age groups who may travel to Concord and Walnut Creek.  The season begins in August and ends with the Dick King Tournament in November.

RECREATIONAL PLUS teams are available for age groups U9 to U14.  The Rec Plus division is open to all players of any level and there are no tryouts.  All coaches are volunteers but one of the two practices every week is run by a professional Mustang Soccer coach.  Teams are formed based on the school your player attends and your home address.  Travel is limited to Danville and Alamo.  The season starts in August with the Kick Off Jamboree and there is a mid-season tournament called the Saddleback tournament.  The season ends with the Dick King Tournament in November.

In summary, the main difference between Rec and Rec Plus is that for Rec Plus one of the practices every week is run by a professional trainer.  Also for Rec Plus there is a Kick off Jamboree and the mid-season Saddleback tournament in addition to the end of season Dick King Tournament.

What is the U7/U8 Academy?

This is for U7 and U8 players who want advanced training. Coaching is provided by professional Mustang Soccer coaches. There are no teams but training centers on drills and 4 x 4 games. The season runs from August to December. There is no travel as most play occurs at MSC or Sycamore Field. There are no tryouts, but in May there is a preview to determine if players are developmentally ready for advanced training and if your child enjoys this different format. Soccer skill level is not taken into consideration.

Remember, Rec Plus and U7/U8 Academy players only register once.

What is Kickstart?

U7/U8 Kick Start Spring Training is fun and rigorous training that will cover basic skills.  Training is provided by our professional competitive coaches and trainers.  Sessions will be coed and are scheduled on Tuesdays at MSC from 4:00 to 5:30.  The program will begin mid April and end in June.

What is Futsal?

Futsal is a variant of soccer that is played on a smaller playing surface and mainly played indoors. Its name is derived from the Portuguese futebol de salão and the Spanish fútbol de salón (and coloquially fútbol sala), which can be translated as "hall football." During the sport’s second world championships held in Madrid in 1985, the name fútbol de salón was used. Since then, all other names have been officially and internationally changed to futsal.

Futsal is played between two teams of five players, one of whom is the goalkeeper. Up to seven substitutes per team are permitted. Unlike some other forms of indoor football, the game is played on a hard court surface delimited by lines; walls or boards are not used. Futsal is also played with a smaller ball with less bounce than a regulation football. The rules create an emphasis on improvisation, creativity, and technique as well as ball control and passing in small spaces.  This is a great progression for players seeking to improve their outdoor game.

Does Mustang Soccer offer Financial Aid?

Mustang Soccer League does provide financial aid in certain circumstances to help financially disadvantaged youth to be able to play soccer. Travel costs, uniform kits and team dues are the responsibility of each individual player.

Coaching your child is an excellent opportunity for real quality time that you will never regret.  It is also a chance to give back to your community in a  tangible way. Having enough volunteer coaches ensures that the practices and games will be closer to your school and home zone.  Mustang is committed to offering free coaching clinics in addition to a lending library of videos and books to help you coach.

Mustang uses volunteer coaches for Rec, Rec+ and Comp Premier.  For Rec and Rec+, when you register your child, you must also register yourself as a coach or assistant coach.
